How To Install Sharepoint 2013 On Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi everyone,

I am trying to install SharePoint 2013 on a Windows 2008 r2 server. Forgive my ignorance, but am I correct in assuming that the domain controller domain should be a public domain address? That way people can access the SharePoint site outside of the local network. The trouble is we only have one server/computer, and it's the domain controller for the local domain ourbusiness.local. Do I need to change the server's domain to ourbusiness.net before installing SharePoint? And if so, how do I go about doing that?

Also I read that having the DC and SharePoint server on the same machine could be a problem, and the person suggested to run the DC on a virtual machine. This is for a small business and they only have one server.

Thanks so much. Please have a great day to anyone who reads this!

Anything other than the DC roles you install on a DC is putting your DC at unnecessary risk.  In this case SharePoint if something happens to SP and it takes the server down you've just taken your DC down with it leaving all your users dead in the water.

You want to install SharePoint on a DC and make that server accessible to the Internet?  Yikes!!!

If this is a small business with only 1 server and no virtualization, is a $50k SharePoint product really what they need?  What about using SharePoint Online instead so they aren't installing this on their DC and opening the DC up to the internet?

Thanks so much for responding! Yes, so that would be a security issue, correct? They are concerned about having private data stored on the cloud, so I am trying to install SharePoint 2013 and use the OneDrive for Business hybrid solution, which allows you to select which files are stored on the cloud. But all of this would be on one server.

Not just a security issue but really you typically don't want anything else running on a DC.  Also yes SharePoint does not like to run on a DC and you would also need a seperate SQL server for SharePoint.  For strictly file sharing like you are looking for I'm sure there has to be something cheaper than SharePoint as a viable solution.

Sorry but why don't you want anything else running on a DC? And so I would need a separate server to run SQL, and then another for SharePoint? Thanks again! :)

The hardware and software requirements for SharePoint 2013 are massive compared to your DC.

You are going to expose your DC to the internet and patch it to support TLS 1.2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 as a web server? Good luck with that. How long will that be viable? You know that SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 are insecure right?

Thanks so much for your help! We have decided to use SharePoint online as it is definitely the more viable solution after you and the other person here explained the risks involved. You've been a big help. =]
